about the art:

What is jiu jitsu?

A martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting, emphasizing technique and leverage to overcome a larger opponent.

How is jiu-jitsu different from other martial arts?

Unlike striking-focused martial arts, Jiu Jitsu focuses on ground fighting and submissions, and is often considered more effective for self-defense against larger opponents.

who can train?

Anyone can train, regardless of age, gender, or fitness level. It’s designed to be accessible to people of all sizes and physical abilities.


before you start

do i need experience And/or do i need to be in shape?

No prior experience is needed, and you do not need to be in great shape to start. Jiu-jitsu is effective for building fitness over time. 

what do i wear?

For your first class, wear a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants. You will not need a Gi (uniform) immediately, though you will need one for Gi classes later. Please trim your finger and toenails. Wear shoes that are easy to slide on and off.

what does class structure look like?

Classes begin with a warm-up and stretching, followed by instruction on a specific technique. The class then ends with "rolling," or sparring, where you apply what you've learned.

what is expected of me during class?

what is the difference between GI and NOGI?

Gi classes require a uniform, which is a heavy cotton jacket and pants, while NoGi classes do not. The difference in uniform is the main distinction between the two.

do i have to compete?

Competing is 100% optional. You can train for the personal benefits of exercise, self-defense, and discipline without ever entering a competition. Should you choose to compete we will help set you up for succes!

 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is considered very effective for self-defense because it focuses on controlling an opponent on the ground, where many fights end up. 

how often should i train?

Consistency is key! We recommend 2-3 times per week. The optimal frequency depends on your goals and schedule.

Belt levels:

Progress is marked by a belt system, similar to other martial arts. It can take many years of consistent training to earn a black belt. 

Culture:

Most jiu-jitsu gyms have a strong sense of community and a code of conduct or etiquette that all students are expected to follow.
